Medicare OTC Benefit Questions

What is a Medicare Advantage OTC benefit?

Some Medicare Advantage plans include an allowance that may be used toward certain eligible over-the-counter health items, such as pain relievers or first-aid supplies. The allowance, the eligible item list, and how it is used are set by the insurance carrier and vary by plan and service area.

Does every Medicare Advantage plan include OTC benefits?

No. An over-the-counter allowance is an optional supplemental benefit. Some plans include one and many do not, and Original Medicare does not provide an OTC allowance. Availability varies by plan, carrier, and where you live.

What types of products can an OTC benefit cover?

When a plan includes an allowance, eligible items are typically everyday health essentials named on the plan's own catalog — categories may include pain relief, vitamins, dental care, first aid, or cold and allergy products. Only the items listed by your plan are eligible.

Can grocery benefits be included?

Certain Medicare Advantage plans may offer a food or grocery allowance, in some cases limited to members with qualifying chronic conditions. Eligibility rules and availability vary by plan and are determined by the carrier, not by Silverpoint.

How much is an OTC allowance?

There is no standard amount. When a plan includes an allowance, the amount and the benefit period are set by the plan. We cannot promise any particular dollar amount, and a licensed agent can only review what a specific plan's materials state.

Do unused OTC benefits roll over?

That depends entirely on the plan. Some plans allow an unused balance to carry into the next benefit period and others do not, with unused amounts expiring. Your plan documents are the authority on how your allowance works.

Can Silverpoint access my current OTC balance?

No. Silverpoint Insurance is an independent licensed insurance agency, not a plan administrator. This website does not connect to your carrier account and cannot see, verify, or spend your OTC balance unless an authorized carrier integration is specifically added in the future with your permission. To check a current balance, contact your plan directly using the number on your member card.

Does requesting a benefit review change my Medicare plan?

No. Requesting a review is simply a request to speak with a licensed insurance agent. Nothing changes about your coverage, and no enrollment happens unless you later choose to enroll and complete an application yourself.

Does it cost anything to speak with a Silverpoint insurance agent?

No. There is no cost or obligation to review your options with a licensed Silverpoint agent.
